Many teens not getting driver's ed | Reuters - 13 Jun 2016 09:25

[
]

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - More than one in five U.S. teens never received driver's education before getting their licenses, according to a new report.

Among states that don't require formal driver training, the rate of teens who have not had driver's ed is even greater, although that doesn't mean teens are any less safe behind the wheel, researchers caution.

"This shouldn't be used as an alarm bell," said Jean Shope, a professor at the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute, who was not involved in this study. "I don't think from what's written (in the study) that we can conclude that if someone didn't take it, they're a bad driver or they should've taken it. We just don't know."

Driver's ed typically involves 30 hours of classroom learning and six hours behind the wheel with an instructor. Schools sometimes offer the classes, and there are also privately run programs.

The original aim of driver's ed was to produce safer teenage drivers, as they are four times more likely overall to crash than older drivers.

Most studies have not shown that driver education programs actually result in fewer crashes, however.

There are some efforts now to update these programs nationwide to make them more effective at improving safety.

To get a handle on just how many teens go through formal training before getting a license, the research team surveyed more than 1,700 high school students from 34 states, 25 of which have a driver-education requirement.

In the journal Pediatrics, the authors report that the states without a requirement had lower rates of teens going through driver education, and certain groups of kids — including blacks, Hispanics, boys and kids with low academic achievement — had especially low numbers.

"We would like to see higher numbers in the states that don't have requirements, since more than one in three teens in these states still aren't getting drivers ed," said Allison Curry, the study's lead author and a researcher at the Center for Injury Research and Prevention at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

In states in the Midwest with no mandate, for instance, only three out of 10 teen drivers had gone through formal training, compared to more than nine out of ten teens in Midwestern states with a driver's ed mandate.

"You can imagine in states that don't have driver education mandates, some jurisdictions may not offer school based driver education. So overall it might be less accessible in states without mandates," Curry told Reuters Health.

Among Hispanic students who lived in states without a requirement, just three out of 10 went through driver education, compared to eight out of 10 in states with a requirement.

A little more than half of boys, black students, kids who earned poor grades, and kids who went to schools in lower socioeconomic-status areas had had driver education in the no-requirement states, compared to more than eight in 10 members of those groups in the other states.

"I think some of the finding has to do with logistical and financial burden when there are no mandates," Curry told Reuters Health.

If states have fewer school-based programs, students have to seek out private programs, which can cost several hundred dollars.

"It's not that surprising that there's more driver education in situations where you might have a higher socioeconomic status," said Shope.

Curry said the findings for black and Hispanic students, males, and kids from poorer areas "is especially concerning…because these groups have been shown to have higher rates of risky driving behaviors and crashes."

But it's not clear that increasing the rates of driver education will lead to fewer crashes.

Shope said driver education is good way to help teens learn to maneuver a car and understand the rules of the road, but it doesn't necessarily make them safer.

"What we think makes a bigger difference is the supervised practice driving that a teen does, hopefully for many months, usually with a parent in the car," Shope told Reuters Health.

Curry said there's been an interest among researchers and policy makers to produce a more updated, national curriculum based on a better scientific understanding of how driver safety can be improved among teens.

The current "curriculum has largely remained unchanged since driver education was first introduced in the mid 1950s," Curry said.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has provided recommendations to update states' driver education programs to incorporate practices based on research findings.

In a statement emailed to Reuters Health, NHTSA Administrator David Strickland said, "with teen drivers continuing to account for a disproportionate number of the fatal crashes on our roadways each year, NHTSA has made it a priority to work with our state safety partners to tackle this issue head on."

The NHTSA's new guidance encourages evidenced-based practices such as getting parents more involved in driver training and extending the time spent in the classroom and behind the wheel.

Curry said she's optimistic that, if they are implemented, the recommendations will improve driver education.

SOURCE: bit.ly/wnfZVX Pediatrics, February 13, 2012.

Read more here

Cars :: Extended Automobile Warranty Coverage: 4 Myths of Buying an Extended Warranty from Dealers - 03 Jun 2016 16:58
Tags:
[
]Poor used car dealers. With consumers learning more and more about them from the internet, overcharging for the automobile itself isn't as easy as it used to be. Fortunately for the poor used car dealers, they've found something else to gouge consumers for: extended automobile warranty coverage.

What's wrong with extended automobile warranties? Absolutely nothing. In fact, given the expensive surprises used cars always pack under the hood, extended automobile warranty coverage is essential. The problem is that dealers overcharge, often by as much as $1,000.It's one of the biggest secrets of the used car industry. You can buy the same extended warranty the dealer will sell you for much less. Why? The dealer is simply buying the extended automobile warranties from a warranty company and marking the prices up.

This is no small secret. Used car dealers are making an ever larger share of their money from selling extended automobile warranties. Unfortunately, when buying an automobile, extended warranty coverage is not a high priority for most consumers. That's especially bad considering the average person knows even less about extended automobile warranty coverage than about automobiles.

There are 4 Extremely Common Myths about Buying an Extended Warranty:

Myth 1: Extended warranties aren't necessary. Fact:Even if a car is in mint condition (and almost no used car really is), it won't stay that way long. Automobiles, like people, develop problems as they age. Besides, even the most thorough inspection can't guarantee there are no problems. Often, the consumer first learns from the dealer that for a used automobile extended warranty coverage is essential. The unprepared buyer simply takes the first warranty offered.

Myth 2: Used car dealerships are the only place you can buy extended automobile warranties. Fact: used car dealerships are generally buying their used automobile warranties from somewhere else and then reselling them for a big markup. You can just buy the warranty from the company yourself.

Myth 3: Comparable extended warranties for the same automobile will cost about the same. Fact: for the same automobile, extended warranty coverage prices can vary as much as $1,000 across comparable warranties.

Myth 4: Used automobile warranties all offer essentially the same protection. Fact:there are important differences in coverage from warranty to warranty. The biggest difference is power-train-only versus bumper-to-bumper. Some warranties have extremely restrictive rules about what damage is covered. There are even a few that only pay for repairs by reimbursement rather than direct to the service provider.

In short, you're better off not buying used automobile extended warranty coverage from a used automobile dealer. You'll save money comparison shop among automobile warranty issuers to find the extended automobile warranty that's the best value for all. After all, do you really want to buy any more from a used car dealer than you absolutely have to?

[
Failed My Driving Test on Roundabouts - 31 May 2016 14:41

[
]I have not updated this blog for a while, and that is because I was very discouraged after I failed my very first driving test due to getting a serious and minor fault on roundabouts!

My preparations leading up to the test were very good with me taking regular lessons and there were no areas of concern apart from me being very nervous at the thought of having to take the assessment and driving with a complete stranger as I'm so used to my instructor sitting next to me.

On the day of the test, my driving instructor picked me up one hour before the appointment time, and we drove to the Hendon area, practiced some test manuevers, dealt with some roundabouts, and before I knew it, it was time to head for the DSA centre.

By the time we got to the centre, I had started to get nervous, and my instructor was trying his best to calm me down.

When the examiner came out, I had decided that I would be going by myself as I could not handle both the examiner and instructor watching my every move.

The test started with the show me tell me questions and then I was told to do the bay parking exercise. I managed to do it to the best of my ability, and then we were off for the 40 minutes of assessment.

As far as I could tell everything was going well, we were into the independent driving section and then I had to deal with Apex corner multi-lane roundabout which I had practiced many times before. I entered the roundabout but for some reason forgot about the traffic lights, by the time I stopped, I had passed the line a bit! I knew it was a serious fault.

I continued with the rest of the driving test, and picked up another minor fault for observations at a mini roundabout and finally we got back to the test centre.

I was therefore not surprised when the DSA examiner said she was sorry but I had not passed.

As my instructor drove me home, I was very upset with myself for making such a silly mistake. I have not bothered to think about lessons or booking another appointment, and only updated this blog following a comment requesting how I was getting on.

When I have overcome my emotions and can get my act together I will call my instructor (who has called and texted my many times) to get the ball rolling again.

Don't forget the highway code is the standard expected, so master it as it could save you from make a simple error that would result in failure, revise it when not taking practical lessons!

The Scenic Driving Trail To Pyramid Mountain – Kloshe Nanitch - 21 Apr 2016 19:29
Tags:
[
]Located in the Olympic Peninsula within the Olympic National Forest, this 44-mile road-trip is within Clallam County. The whole trail can take 4.5 hours to complete which already includes the hiking roundtrip to Pyramid Mountain. The road surface is easy with blind curves and narrow paths. The challenging section on this trail is the 7-mile distance from Kloshe Nanitch and the Snider Work Station of the Forest Service where the road is steep and mostly on a rough and loose surface which requires a high-clearance 4-wheel-drive vehicle.

Information about the trail is at the Pacific Ranger District Forks Office of the Olympic National Forest. The rest stops are at the picnic area in Kloshe Nanitch where tables and toilets are available but there is no water here. Snider Work Station also has a campground nearby at the Klahowya. Some highlights on this trip are the vistas offered by the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the Vancouver Island. The Pyramid Mountain which is 3,000 feet offers a grand view on its ridgeline hike toward an aircraft spotting station used during the World War II.

A splendid view of the Olympic Mountains and Sol Duc Valley can also be seen from afar atop of Kloshe Nanitch where there is a replica if the fire lookout built in 1916. There are two ways to start this trip to get to the trailhead. First is to start at the northeast where you take SR 112 onto East Twin River Road. This is about 8.2 miles west of Joyce and this is where the trailhead stands.

Alternately starting from the south, begin at US 101 toward West Snider Road which is 7.4 miles east of US 101 (SR11) or 8.5 miles west of Lake Crescent. Move along West Snider Road that leads to Snider Work Station and then move ahead onto Road 3040 to Kloshe Nanitch following some trail signs. At SR 112, the trail makes a descent along East Twin River Road through a verdant forest. It then continues to narrow on a one-lane path bending along the East Twin Rivers canyon. It will then lead to a junction with Road 3068 for about 7.2 miles and continues to Road 3040 onto Kloshe Nanitch. Proceed to make an eastern swerve to the left following Road 3068 that leads to Pyramid Mountain.

From the junction, drive 9.7 miles until reaching the trailhead for Pyramid Mountains hiking trail. The road that forks left is the once for Pyramid Mountain while the one on the right is for Lake Crescent. Here you can park your car to start the hike on the ridgeline. You may then return to road 3040 to proceed 8.2 miles on Road 595 to the lookout at North Point which takes another 1.4 miles. After the lookout, you may proceed down to Road 3040 on the southern section of the ridge prior to approaching Snider Work Center and the West Snider Road. AT this point, the road rejoins US 101.

http://northernopenmri.com/[

Tax Deductions for a Truck Driver - 21 Apr 2016 10:04

[
]"Truckers who declare a per diem deduction on their annual income tax filings could find themselves in hot water with the IRS if they rely exclusively on electronic logs retained by the motor carriers."

Jim O'Donnell, President, Trucker Tax Service

The job of a truck driver is physically demanding, since he has to drive for long stretches. It gets even more taxing for an over the road (OTR) truck driver, since he is continuously driving to transport goods and stays away from his home for quite some time. This is true whether they work for companies or individual agencies. Like all professions, they are also subject to taxation, however, they are also granted some special allowances. While formulating their annual taxes, a majority of them forget that there are certain expenses that are not considered for tax. Go through the following truck driver tax deductions in order to know about the same.

A Background

As already mentioned, truck drivers can be regional and local. The deductions in tax vary according to your designation in the trucking industry. Some companies pay for your medical exams and uniforms and related expenses. Therefore, there are no deductions there. In the companies that do not pay for these, the expenses are deducted. An OTR driver will have 2 registered addresses. If you live in one state and work in another, stay abreast of how you need to file for your income tax returns.

List of Tax Deductions

License

This is the amount you will be spending for creating and updating your license, more accurately termed as 'commercial driver's license' (CDL). These costs are totally deductible. Also, if you are to complete certain educational formalities to maintain your CDL, these expenses are deducted too.

Telephone/Internet

These come under 'access' expenses. They include the expenses for telephone, data plans, internet connectivity, and even satellite. Though these tools are intended for official purposes (as recognized by the IRS), they may be used for personal reasons too. While the entire cost of the appliance is deducted, in case of fees, the deduction is 50%.

Medical Exam

Drivers are expected to undergo a thorough medical examination before employment. The expenses incurred for the same are deducted. They are included under business deductions. The tests could include drug test, DOT physical, etc.

Association Dues

Most truck drivers are affiliated to certain groups or organizations. The membership fees for such groups are deductible. Even if you are not a member (voluntary association), your dues are deducted, provided you display documents that vouch for your participation and assistance.

Travel

This is a deduction that is principally meant for OTR drivers. Whatever expenses they would incur while traveling are deductible. It includes transportation and lodging charges. Parking costs as well as toll booth expenses are also included.

Meals

Whatever meals the driver will have on his way to the target destination are liable to be deducted. This also includes the tips he has paid for. If he has his own equipment (coffee maker, tupperware, refrigerator, etc.), these expenses can be deducted too. An important point to be taken note of here is the per-diem meal cost. This concept means that a stipulated amount is deducted by the IRS for your meals. As of 2011, this cost was USD 46.

Maintenance

Trucks require regular maintenance, like all vehicles. All the expenses required to maintain the vehicle are included in this category. If the vehicle has broken down and needs repairs, these costs are also included.

Fuel

If the drivers pay for the fuel out of their pocket, they can deduct this expense too.

Personal

Any personal expense by the driver qualifies for deduction. These include alarm clock, coolers, bedding, first aid, curtains, etc.

Subscriptions

If the driver subscribes to trucking industry magazines, his subscription fees are subject to deduction. This is because such magazines contain the latest rules and regulations of the profession.

Administration

These include the ATM fees and credit card fees. It also includes the check reorder fees.

Interest

These deductions are for business loan requirements. They are subject to certain other conditions, however.

Office and Cleaning Supplies

These come under personal deductions. Office supplies include stationary, like books, paper, pens, pencils, binders, stapler, clips, envelopes, folders, punching machine, maps, log books, clipboard, etc. Cleaning supplies include paper towels, garbage bags, vacuum cleaner (portable), hand cleaners, window cleaner, sanitizer, etc.

Postage

These come under travel deductions. These include costs of posting mails to your employer from wherever you are traveling, period. It also includes the costs of mailing invoices, stamps, and other bills.

Real Estate

These mostly include penalties. Mortgage penalties, early withdrawal penalties, etc., are some examples. It also includes mortgage interests and real estate taxes.

Safety Gear and other Equipment

Safety gear includes cargo straps, boots, hard hat, gloves, safety glasses, rain gear, etc. Other equipment are the tools required for maintenance purposes. These include electrical tapes, duct tapes, wrenches, lumpers, tires, hammers, flashlights, screwdrivers, binders, truck parts, sponges, batteries, antenna, etc. Load equipment also comes under this category, and includes chains, straps, cords, and straps.

Clothing

These mostly include the uniform expenses. It also includes the expenses of laundry and dry cleaning, which include laundry bag, soap, brush, hangers, iron, etc.

Electronics

These are the expenses that the driver makes if his electronic equipment is under repair. They include cell phone, charger, GPS systems, laptops, radio, etc. When filing for your income tax returns, be sure to discuss things with a tax professional. If you have incurred the above expenses, you will be eligible for truck driver tax deductions. Also remember that you have to provide a proof of the expenses, so collect the required documents and file them away neatly.

[
]Who are accustomed to driving may not understand, but the traffic is composed of elements that can be among the biggest fears of people. The indiscretions committed by other drivers, coupled with the desire not to make mistakes and the risk of accidents often are locks when someone decides to be behind the wheel.

According to the instructor Luciano Lessa, specialized rehabilitation in traffic, people who are afraid of driving generally share a profile perfectionist and very responsible. "Usually, those who can overcome the fear becomes an excellent conductor. People are cautious, they do everything safely inside right", he explains. Luciano worked as an instructor practical, theoretical and educational director at Drivers Training Centres (CFCs), in Porto Alegre. However, we believe that training does not prepare practiced for transit to be focused on current practical test of DMV. In 2003, he started the course for Transit Rehabilitation for persons already qualified, who for some reason do not drive or need to recycle.

Luciano believes in driving school, students are conditioned to the path that will be done at the DMV practice test. "The future driver learns tricks that do not apply in real life and ends up taking a wallet with details to fix. Some return to school to improve their technique or lose the fear, "he says. For the instructor, however, it is normal to have uncertainty due to lack of skill and familiarity with the vehicle. "The driving school car is not yours. The student never drove the car in the garage that has never been alone in traffic. It is common to ask for help", he adds.

Insecurity at the wheel

The fear of driving is usually linked to insecurity with the attitude of other drivers. For Livia Bongiorni, fear is totally related to lack of confidence in driving. "It scares me in traffic the lack of patience and respect from drivers, everyone is always in a hurry and end up committing infractions totally unnecessary and leaving the traffic chaos," he explains.

A year ago, bought a car and Livia have attempted to practice more and more to become safer. "The fact that fear of driving limits me in many things, I do not do things that are far from where I live, to expedite things from my everyday life, I just depending on someone to get around, or spending money on taxi", comments.

Lizia Heineck also afraid for lack of practice. "I took the portfolio in 2005 aged 18, then tried to drive sometimes, but not often and so I lost the habit. I'm not afraid, but with the lack of practice to get the car in Porto Alegre today would be complicated, would have to go to a quiet place without traffic and without much movement to get used to return the direction", he says.

However, for Lizia, not driving is not a limiting factor. "I work very close to home and I usually walk. I try to do all things close to home, places I visit often are all close. The only difficulty is when I have some commitment evening. I live in a place that has bus options and stocking, which facilitates. While studying in college often went by bus and did not see any problem", he adds.

Routine helps overcome

Vitor Luis Silva Corbellini is an example of someone who was afraid to drive, even with qualification in hand. Even without car, attended the driving school lessons, thinking of just buying a vehicle, and passed the practical test. However, it took longer than planned to invest in a car, which brought even more afraid of traffic. "I was afraid to traffic, fear of an accident, did not want embarrassment… As was once in a class at CFC. From 1997 to 2011, when I bought the car, tried to drive at least once a month", he says.

The difference between what we thought the traffic was and what he really was only felt when Corbellini really started driving frequently. "You have to feel the traffic, follow speed. Who has not used the same speed and the same reflection of who is always in transit. But people who drive too do not want to know", he says.

To lose the fear, were 50 classes with instructor Luciano rehabilitation, but believes that today has become a very cautious driver. "At first it was traumatizing, but now I force myself to face situations that I'm afraid, as heavy traffic, to confront him. My initial insecurity today is the security they do everything right. Respect the limits too, am a driver regimented. I run a day-in, the other not to save. Once a week I go for train parking in quiet places. It is a matter of practice. The day to day is that we note the difficulties", he concludes.

5 tips to overcome fear

The instructor Luciano says his training is focused on the reality of transit for each person, with his common paths. "You have to get used to the ways it makes in your routine," he explains. Still, a few tips can help you lose the fear of driving:

1 - Login to the car and "dating" the vehicle moving on the seat, adjust the positions and read the manual are the best ways to learn and get used car.

2 - Walking paths in quiet: it is best to start by quiet streets in days of little movement, to know the car. Do not even try to start midweek at 18h. The attempt can be even more traumatic.

3 - Always Caring mirrors: the driver must be sure of what he sees.

4 - Make the most challenging routes on Sundays: it is best to choose a day when the streets are empty to see how the path is and how it should be done.

5 - Walking at least one hour for the first time: the ideal is to run the car long enough to make mistakes, learn the car, fix the problems.
